Obama: Wall St. protests express public's anger (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama says demonstrators protesting against Wall Street and economic inequality are expressing the frustrations of the American public.

Speaking at a White House news conference, Obama says he understands the public's concerns about how the nation's financial system works. And he says Americans see Wall Street as an example of the financial industry not always following the rules.

However, Obama says the U.S. must have a strong and effective financial sector for the economy to grow. He says the financial regulation bill he championed is designed to make sure there is tougher oversight of the financial industry.

The Occupy Wall Street protests started Sept. 17 in New York. Related demonstrations have popped up around the country.

Stem Cell Therapy Might Help Kidney ... - Health Nutrition and Fitness

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 5 (HealthDay News) ? A novel stem cell therapy
given shortly after a kidney transplant allows some patients to cast away
the medicines meant to keep their body from attacking the new organ,
according to a small new study from the Stanford University School of
Medicine.

Kidney transplants are common in the United States and while they can
greatly improve quality of life for someone with kidney failure,
post-transplant life still carries challenges.

A lifelong cocktail of drugs is required to help a transplant patient
ward off rejection of the new kidney. The powerful medicines have serious
side effects, too, including an increased risk for type 2 diabetes,
certain cancers, heart disease, and infection. Though meant as a
protective therapy, some immune-suppressing drugs can contribute to damage
and the eventual loss of the transplanted kidney.

In a letter in the Oct. 6 New England Journal of Medicine, Dr.
Samuel Strober describes the protocol he invented and reports on data from
12 kidney transplant patients who received a new kidney from a ?perfect
match,? typically a sibling. Eight of the patients, who ranged in age from
22 to 68 and underwent the stem cell therapy, have now been off
immune-suppressing drugs for at least a year. For some, the drug-free
stretch has lasted as long as three years, Strober said.

?Organ transplantation has been a very successful enterprise in
treating people with organ failure kidneys, hearts, the lungs. These have
been life-saving procedures. But the price people still have to pay is
lifelong use of medications that prevent rejection,? said Strober, an
immunologist and professor of medicine at Stanford.

Strober said his new method, honed over 30 years of research in mice,
involves a combination of radiation, donor stem cells, and antibodies
(proteins that help deplete some of the patient?s own immune cells).

Following transplant surgery in the hospital, the kidney recipient
receives radiation targeted at the lymph nodes, spleen and thymus gland to
temporarily weaken the immune system. The antibodies are given then, too.
Ten days later, the organ donor?s stem cells, called hematopoietic
progenitor cells ? which form blood and immune-system cells ? are
infused into the new kidney patient on an outpatient basis. The donors
stem cells, over time, differentiate and join with the transplant patients
own immune system, making it more receptive to the donor kidney, Strober
said.

A couple of immunosuppressant drugs are given early on, too, he said,
but the patient is weaned off of them if no signs of rejection appear
within the early months.

?The goal of the study was to try and eliminate the use of lifelong
drugs and keep the transplant. So far, so good,? Strober said, referring
to the eight study patients who no longer take anti-rejection medication
and whose kidneys were functioning well.

Strober?s letter noted that one patient, who had discontinued
anti-rejection drugs for three years, eventually had a heart attack and
later died while exercising.

The research holds promise for improving more lives down the road, said
Dr. David Scadden, a professor of medicine at Harvard University and
co-founder and co-director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and the
Harvard University Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology.

?I am very excited about this study. The problem of keeping people on
chronic immune-suppressing drugs is very significant. To have the
opportunity to use stem cells as a way to overcome that is very creative
and based on really sound science,? said Scadden.

The news is an update on a similar but smaller study the authors
published in NEJM several years ago, said Dr. Niraj Desai, director
of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program at Johns Hopkins
Hospital.

?While the findings were similar, this involved a longer follow-up. One
thing you?re always concerned about is how long a tolerant state will
last,? said Desai, who added that the next step would be to test the
Stanford approach in patients who are not perfect matches ? for instance,
an adult child donating to a parent.

Strober said he and his colleagues are already recruiting such
?half-matches,? whose immune systems are less compatible, for the next leg
of the study funded by a U.S. National Institutes of Health grant.

If such an approach were to be successful long-term in a large number
of patients, there would likely be health care cost benefits, too, said
Dr. Bryan Becker, past president of the National Kidney Foundation, and
assistant vice president for health affairs at the University of
Illinois.

The number of kidney transplants has been climbing in recent years.
According to the National Kidney Foundation, 16,901 procedures were
performed in the United States in 2010, compared with 16,634 in 2007.

Strober said the new treatment tallies as much as $40,000 annually but
would pay for itself over time, while immune-suppressing drugs add up to
between $10,000 and $15,000 a year.

While a transplant from a living sibling who?s a match can last 25 to
30 years on average with current treatments, a kidney from a deceased
donor typically lasts only about 12 years, he said.

Organ failure is costly, about $80,000 the year it occurs, said
Strober. To eliminate a second transplant would cut medical spending
significantly, as would eliminating the need for dialysis, a pricey (about
$70,000 annually) and time-consuming blood-cleansing process that kidney
failure patients must undergo three times a week.

It?s too early to declare the novel post-transplant approach as
something that should be an everyday practice, said Scadden, who hopes
other medical centers will become involved to help further the
research.

?If you just think about what these patients go through, they have had
so much to deal with already. They have been on dialysis, then they?ve
waited for a transplant, and then they finally get the chance to resume
life and they have to take these medications that have side effects. To be
able to get away from that constant reminder and burden has always been a
hoped-for outcome and I celebrate the team that got it this far,? said
Scadden.

The Personal Computer Lives | Premier Technology

Portable computing has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, bringing tablet and smartphone devices to the front lines of technological advancement. These gadgets are capable of doing some awesome things, but to what extent do they actually replace the use of the classic PC? Glitz and glamour aside, the personal computer remains to be the most practical option for a wide range of computing needs. Though tablets and smartphones seem to be the dominating technological force at the moment, PC lovers need not fear. Here are the top three reasons why the PC isn?t going anywhere.

Desktops Are Still Needed ??? Tech critics have long predicted the death of the personal computer. However, PCs are still alive and well and, obviously, much needed. There are certain practical and physical limitations that always seem to keep desktop computers as the most powerful option. Even if technology eventually advances to a place where a current desktop?s power fits into a tablet, think how much power will then be able to fit into a desktop where that same technology is applied! No matter how sophisticated portable technologies become, desktops will always be the superior option in terms of speed and strength. Tablets Are Less Practical ??? Tablets are great tools, useful in a variety of situations. While a tablet offers some great portability options, the PC is still the preferred machine for sophisticated computing. There are some tasks that are easier to complete on a PC based on practical sizing and style. A personal computer is superior for composing long documents, running complex programs and even surfing the web to the full extent of Internet functionality. All of this to say, PCs are generally much more ergonomic than any tablet, making them the more practical option. Smartphones Are Less Functional ??? It seems like everyone has a smartphone these days. Smartphones are great for checking your email, watching YouTube videos or even making a phone call. Some critics claim that, as smartphones become more sophisticated, they will begin to steal away some of the laptop market. However, much like tablets, smartphones aren?t a practical choice for basic computing. Case in point: the screens are too small. This is an innate limitation, because no one wants a phone that can?t fit in his or her pocket. Can you imagine a college student writing an entire term paper on their smartphone? Neither can we. While the portable industry has made remote computing better than ever, it?s still important to have faith in the importance of PCs. For more reasons why the PC age is still alive and well, take a look at this article.

BofA to close correspondent mortgage lending unit (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Bank of America Corp (BAC.N) said Tuesday it will close its correspondent mortgage lending business by the end of the year after failing to find a buyer for the operation.

The largest U.S. bank said in August that it planned to exit the business, either by selling it or winding it down. The unit funds loans made by smaller banks.

Bank of America will continue to make loans directly to retail customers.

Since taking over last year, Bank of America Chief Executive Brian Moynihan has been selling off business lines and shedding riskier operations as he looks to raise capital to cover mortgage losses and to meet new international capital standards.

The bank will transfer many of its 1,200 correspondent lending employees to other businesses, bank spokesman Rick Simon said. In a first step, about 100 employees in Westlake Village, California, will be moved during the week of October 17 to the unit that handles troubled mortgage loans.

The bank's correspondent lending employees are primarily based in Westlake Village; Tampa, Florida; and Thousand Oaks, California.

(AP) ? An Italian group says freed American student Amanda Knox is boarding a flight out of Italy en route home to the United States.

She is leaving a day after an Italian appeals court dramatically overturned the young American's conviction of sexually assaulting and brutally slaying her British roommate.

The Italy-US Foundation, which has championed Knox's cause, said the American was at Leonardo da Vinci airport in Rome boarding a flight to London, where she will catch a connecting flight to the United States.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

PERUGIA, Italy (AP) ? Amanda Knox was making her way home to the United States a free woman Tuesday, after an Italian appeals court dramatically overturned the American student's conviction of sexually assaulting and brutally slaying her British roommate.

AP photographers and camera crew at Leonardo da Vinci airport in Rome saw Knox family members in a terminal where the student is expected to board a British Airways flight to London and then catch a connection for the United States following four years in an Italian prison.

Knox was not immediately seen, and believed to have been escorted by police through a nonpublic entrance to the airport.

Back in Perugia, the family of slain British student Meredith Kercher remained stunned by the verdict and searching for answers.

"It was a bit of a shock," said Stephanie Kercher, the victim's sister. "It's very upsetting ... We still have no answers."

Lyle Kercher, a brother, said the family is still trying to understand how a decision that "was so certain two years ago has been so dramatically overturned."

Lyle Kercher said the family has been left to wonder who is guilty in the 21-year-old Kercher's death after the release of Knox and her one time boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito on appeal. A third man has been convicted in the brutal slaying, however his trial concluded that he did not act alone.

"If they two released yesterday were not the guilty parties, we are obviously left to wonder who is the other guilty person or people. We are left back at square one," Lyle Kercher said.

Review: Atkins falls short on a complete album (AP)

Rodney Atkins, "Take A Back Road" (Curb)

Rodney Atkins, for better or worse, epitomizes the stance of the majority of contemporary male country singers. He celebrates family and rural life, and he unapologetically declares he is rough around the edges. But he doesn't offer enough to differentiate himself from others.

On songs like the album's title cut ? a current No. 1 Billboard country hit ? Atkins pumps blood into the men he portrays in his lyrics. His voice communicates in a genuine way, mixing a conversational tone with dramatic flourishes. When he supports a son who occasionally causes trouble in "He's Mine," he makes it sound like a true-life tale.

But Atkins always pads his albums with forgettable songs, such as the silly love song "Feet." He's the kind of country artist who caters to radio without giving his fans much more to enjoy beyond the tunes they already know.

He also inexplicably includes the song "Farmer's Daughter," a 2010 hit included on a revamped reissue of his previous album, "It's America." Why include it on a special release then stick it on the next album too? Such moves make Atkins an artist designed for downloading tracks instead of entire albums.

CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: On "Family," Atkins spins a fast-shuffling narrative filled with sharp characterizations of a flawed yet loving extended clan. Unlike too many country songs, "Family" doesn't overly sentimentalize complex family relationships. Instead, it honors the reasons relatives stick together despite their differences and defects.

The Truth Behind Business Consulting and Management Consulting ...

This is a topic many people are dying to learn more about.

The data is from my own consulting experience, current consulting friends, and publicly available sources. They should be pretty close to the real numbers.

Here they are!

1st year out of college undergraduate:

Base salaries: $50-65K
Signing bonuses: $5-10K
Relocation/moving expenses: $5-10K
Year-end bonus: $5-10K

Thats an average of $70-75K in first year compensation. As a summer intern, you can expect a comparable, pro-rated salary (minus the bonuses). Please note that this does not include retirement contributions.

First year out of business school/MBA:

Base salaries: $110-140K
Signing bonuses: $20-40K
Relocation/moving expenses: $10-20K
Year-end bonus: $20-40K

Thats an average of $160-200K in total first year compensation. Please note that this does not include retirement contributions.

Upward track through partner:

My numbers have a higher risk of being inaccurate as this is only from personal anecdotes, so if you have better information, please let me know.

Engagement manager/Project leader: $175-250K
Associate principal/Senior project leader: $250-400K
Partner/Principal: $500-800K
Senior partner/Director: $1M plus

At more senior levels the pay is increasingly performance-based

How consulting salaries lose to finance:

At almost every position as a management consultant, your salary will be 30-50% lower than a comparable position in investment banking. This varies by year and median salaries in non-banking departments (such as research, asset management, sales & trading) are lower. The truth is simple: consulting is not a profession to make big bucks.

How consulting firms make up the lower salaries:

Better benefits ? healthcare, life insurance, etc Retirement contributions ? this one is important because at McKinsey/Bain/BCG, theyll contribute an added 5-10% of your base salary to your retirement funds, effectively a 5-10% year-end bonus! (A reader just informed me that his McKinsey/Bain/BCG retirement contribution starting fulltime in 09 was 4.5%, which is lower than Id seen in previous years) More generous reimbursement policies, travel perks, etc

Hope you found that informative. Good luck breaking into consulting.

Four Simple First Steps to Small Business Accounting | openkiwi.com

convert MOV to WMV

When starting a new business some of the daunting tasks the entrepreneur will face is that of accounting. Many small business house owners neglect this vital area of business, particularly during begin up. Making this mistake can be fatal and lots of companies fail due to a lack of information of the business? finances. Preserving good information and having good accounting practices from day one is paramount. There are lots of simple, but efficient techniques that can assist the small business owner get their funds on track.

The first, and most vital thing, you are able to do is to set your online business up as a legal entity separate from yourself. This implies organising some type of corporation, or LLC. This straightforward step is missed by too many entrepreneurs. Preserving your private and business funds and taxes separate is the principle purpose for this, but there are other benefits as well. Which of the totally different entities is best for you will depend upon many elements of your online business, and you must consult a CPA and an attorney that can assist you with the process.

After getting decided on which entity you will use and have adopted your state?s guidelines to set it up you?ll need to file form SS-4 with the IRS to obtain your EIN, which shall be your online business? federal tax ID number. As quickly as you?ve gotten arrange your online business entity the next move shall be to go to your bank (you should definitely try the competitors?s provides as properly) to open your online business checking account. Most banks provide free small business checking accounts with no minimum balances. If the bank goes to charge you for small business checking, or a debit card, find another bank.

When choosing a bank you should definitely ask the sales representative if the statements are lower on the final business day of the month, so that every statement represents a person month. If the statement is lower on a floating 30 cycle, or if the cycle begins on the day of the month on which you opened the account find another bank. This straightforward thing can save hours when settling your account every month.

It?s also a wise idea to have a number of accounts devoted to totally different parts of your online business as well. This will include a payroll account, an account that receives fee deposits and an working account to call a few. If the bank only allows one free account per business find another bank. You could find that you simply need a number of accounts and keeping up with them all is beginning to get confusing. If this happens ask your banker about the Cash Management providers they offer. These providers will usually include charges, but can help save you time, energy and headaches.

After getting your new business arrange and you might be beginning to see some money circulation you should ensure that to maintain your online business and personal funds fully separated. Which means only revenue from the business must be going via the business checking accounts, and more importantly that no private purchases be made via the business.

It?s crucial that you simply take a wage from your online business, rather than spending the business? money on yourself. There are several alternative ways to take a wage together with taking a hard and fast amount and/or a share amount primarily based on the business? performance.

My final point can be on the listing of issues usually missed by the small business owner. Ensure you hire a bookkeeper. This point bears repeating ? Make sure that you hire a bookkeeper. Even when your online business is small it is going to be an incredible profit to rent someone to maintain the books. Most new companies fail to do that because they are trying to economize, but the fact of the matter is that you could get a bookkeeper for around $25 per hour relying on where you do business. Your time can be better spent on other points of the business that are your specialty and others can?t do. Ensure you are leveraging your time properly. There are literally thousands of bookkeepers out there but just one you! A majority of these providers will usually save you a lot of money in the long run.

These are only a few points that each one new business house owners should ensure that to focus on during begin up. This was on no account an exhaustive listing of accounting procedures, but just a few of crucial first steps. Finance and accounting are among the most vital points of business, but are so usually missed by the new business owner.
