(AP) ? Fiscal cliff? Recession? Not in Asia, where the first countries to see 2013 dawn will enthusiastically welcome the new year.

Increasingly democratic Myanmar will have a public countdown for the first time. Jakarta plans a huge street party befitting Indonesia's powering economy.

In Sydney, eager revelers camped over Sunday night on the shores of the harbor to get the best vantage points as 1.5 million are expected to see the fireworks show centered on the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

In Hong Kong, this year's 12.5 million Hong Kong dollar ($1.6 million) fireworks display was being billed by organizers as the biggest ever in the southern Chinese city. Police expect as many as 100,000 people to watch, local news reports said.

The buoyant economies of the Asia-Pacific are prepared to party with renewed optimism despite the so-called fiscal cliff threatening to reverberate globally from the United States and the tattered economy of Europe.

Celebrations were planned around the world later Tuesday, with hundreds of thousands expected to fill Times Square in New York City to watch the drop of a Waterford crystal-studded ball.

One day after dancing in the snow to celebrate the first anniversary of leader Kim Jong Un's ascension to supreme commander, North Koreans were preparing Monday to mark the arrival of the new year, marked as "Juche 102" on North Korean calendars - the number referring to 102 years since the birth of North Korean founder Kim Il Sung. "Juche" means self-reliance, the North Korean ideology of independence promoted by Kim, who was born in 1912. His grandson now rules North Korea.

In New Delhi, the festive mood was marred by the death Saturday of a young rape victim.

Several hotels, clubs and residents associations in Indian capital decided to cancel planned festivities and asked people to light candles to express their solidarity with the victim whose plight sparked public rallies for women's safety.

"Let there be no New Year celebrations across the country. It will be a major tribute to the departed soul," said Praveen Khandelwal, the secretary-general of the Confederation of All India Traders, an umbrella group of traders who run shops and businesses across the country.

In a field in Myanmar's largest city, Yangon, workers early Monday were testing a giant digital countdown screen with the backdrop of the revered Shwedagon pagoda.

Arranged by local Forever Media group and Index Creative Village, a Thai major event organizer, the celebration will be the first public New Year countdown in Myanmar, a country ruled for almost five decades by military regimes that discouraged or banned big public gatherings.

"We are planning this public new year event because we want residents of Yangon to enjoy the public countdown like in other countries," said Win Thura Hlaing, managing director of Forever Blossom company, a subsidiary of Forever Media.

With live music performances by singers and celebrities, colorful light shows, food stalls, fireworks and other events at the venue, the countdown is expected to draw 50,000 people, Win Thura Hlaing said.

Jakarta's street party will center on a 7-kilometer (4-mile) main thoroughfare closed to all traffic from nightfall until after midnight. Workers were erecting 16 large stages along the normally car-clogged, 8-lane highway through the heart of the city. Indonesia's booming economy is a rare bright spot amid global gloom and bringing prosperity ? or the hope of it ? to Indonesians.

Spirits in the capital have been further raised by the election of a new, populist governor, who is pledging action in tackling the city's massive infrastructure problems.

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said about 1.5 million spectators were expected to line the harbor to watch the 6.6 million Australian dollar ($6.9 million) fireworks display, while another 2 million Australians among a population of 22 million would watch it on television.

"This is really putting Australia on the map in terms of welcoming people to the new year," Moore told reporters at the harbor before the event.

Thousands lined the harbor shore in festive crowds under a blue summer sky by late afternoon, their number undiminished by Australian government warnings that the Washington deadlock on the U.S. debt crisis was partly to blame for a slowing Australian economy.

Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue is host for the event.

Florida tourist Melissa Sjostedt was among the thousands gathered near a southern pylon of the bridge. She said seeing the fireworks would fulfill an ambition started a decade ago when she read about them in a National Geographic magazine.

"Ever since that, I've always wanted to see this for real, live, in person," the 30-year-old said.

Despite the somber mood in the Philippines due to devastation from a recent typhoon, a key problem for authorities remained how to prevent revelers from setting off illegal huge firecrackers ? including some labeled "Goodbye Philippines" and "Bin Laden" ? that maim and injure hundreds of Filipinos each year, many of them children.

A government scare tactic, which involved doctors displaying brutal-looking surgical scalpels used for amputations of firecracker blast victims, has not fully worked in the past so health officials came up with a novel idea: Go Gangnam style.

A government health official, Eric Tayag, donned the splashy outfit of South Korean viral star PSY and danced to the tune of his Youtube-hit "Gangnam Style" video while preaching against the use of illegal firecrackers on TV, in schools and in public arenas.

"The campaign has become viral," Tayag said. "We've asked kids and adults to stay away from big firecrackers and just dance the Gangnam and they're doing it."

The number of firecracker injuries has gone down since the campaign was launched early this month.

Hong Kong feng shui master Raymond Lo predicted 2013 would be less turbulent than 2012 because the Chinese new year in February will usher in the year of the snake, bringing an end to the year of the dragon, which was associated with water. Water is one of the five elements in feng shui theory, the Chinese practice of arranging objects and choosing dates to improve luck.

"Water is fear. So that's why we have had so much turbulence especially in the winter months," such as doomsday prophecies, school shootings and concerns about the fiscal cliff, said Lo.

"But the good news is that the coming year of the snake is the first time that fire has come back since 2007. Fire actually is the opposite to water, fire is happiness. So therefore the year of the snake is a much more optimistic year. So you can see signs of economic recovery now," he added.

"The positive thing is that people are very optimistic, therefore it will have a very strong drive on the economic recovery. We expect the stock market will do well, the property market will do well," Lo said.

home improvement | green solid surface countertops

Solid surface countertops have become more popular in the past decade and they are an excellent addition to either the kitchen or bathroom. However, with numerous manufacturers and products out there, it can be hard to choose the right one, particularly when you are trying to decipher which product is the most environmentally conscious.

Most solid surface countertops are made with new materials and a petroleum-based binder. Not the most earth-friendly option. One product that we like is ECO by Cosentina since they use a corn oil-based binder and their countertops are made up of 75 percent recycled materials such as mirror, glass, porcelain, earthenware and vitrified ash. Additionally, the company really does walk the walk: they recycle 94% of their water, use no solvents for the maintenance and cleaning of machinery, use advanced filtering systems and they continue to develop technology that will allow them to produce eco-friendly products. In addition to having received many awards, ECO by Cosentina has received certification from GreenGuard and from Cradle to Cradle as well as LEED.

Besides all of the green benefits of ECO, you need to know if it really is a good quality product. ECO It is a very hard surface and has extremely low water absorption and porosity making it a great product for your next kitchen or bathroom remodeling project. Additionally, it is very stylish and comes in a wide range of colors with the option of either a shiny or matte finish.

Maintenance on this product is also straightforward:
? Clean all spills immediately after they occur
? Cleaning can be done with simple soap and water or with a gentle pH-balanced house cleaner
? Chemical sealants should never be used

If you?re looking for environmentally conscious products during your bathroom remodeling, don?t hesitate to talk to your supplier or bathroom remodeler? about solid surface countertops and the benefits that they offer. They should be able to offer you plenty of guidance based on their years of experience. I also recommend joining some online forums to find out what types of experiences other consumers have had with their countertops.

Do you have any experiences with solid surface countertops? Tell us about them in our comments section below.

Surgery Junkies: Wellness and Pathology in Cosmetic CultureSurgery Junkies: Wellness and Pathology in Cosmetic CultureThe ease of accessibility, improvements in safety and technology, media attention, growing acceptance by the public, or an increasingly superficial culture: whatever the reason, cosmetic surgery is more popular today than ever. In 2005, in the United States alone, there were nearly two million aesthetic operations-more than quadruple the number from 1984, along with more than eight million non-surgical procedures. Innovative surgical methods have also brought cosmetic improvements to new areas of the body, such as the ribs, buttocks, and genitalia.

Despite the increasing normalization of cosmetic surgery, however, there are still those who identify individuals who opt for bodily modifications as dupes of beauty culture, as being in conflict with feminist ideals, or as having some form of psychological weakness. In this ground-breaking book, Victoria Pitts-Taylor examines why we consider some cosmetic surgeries to be acceptable or even beneficial and others to be unacceptable and possibly harmful. Similarly, why are some patients considered to be psychologically healthy while others deemed pathological? When is the modification of our appearance empowering and when is it a sign of weakness?

Drawing on years of research, her personal experience with cosmetic surgery, analysis of newspaper articles and television shows, and in-depth interviews with surgeons, psychiatrists, lawyers, judges, and others, Pitts-Taylor brings new perspectives to the promotion of "extreme" makeovers on television, the medicalization of "surgery addiction," the moral and political interrogation that many patients face, and feminist debates on the topic.

While many feel that cosmetic surgery is a deeply personal choice and that its pathology is rooted in the individual psyche, Pitts-Taylor makes a compelling argument that the experience, meanings, and motivations for cosmetic surgery are highly social. A much needed "makeover" of our cultural understanding of cosmetic surgery, this book is both authoritative and thoroughly engaging.

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Muhammad Shahid Nazir is a testament to the age-old adage that if you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day, but if you teach a man to sing about fish, his song will shoot up the British pop chart.

The 31-year-old Pakistani fishmonger catapulted to fame in recent weeks in the unlikeliest of circumstances: while hawking frozen snapper and mackerel for one British pound ($1.61) at Queens Market in London.

Not comfortable with shouting about his merchandise to attract customers, as many vendors do, he came up with a simple ditty that someone caught on video and posted on YouTube earlier this year. It became a viral sensation and has been viewed over 7 million times.

"One Pound Fish changed my whole life," said Nazir, who returned to Pakistan on Thursday to a hero's welcome and has been inundated with requests to perform and do advertisements. "I am so happy now."

To describe the song as catchy would be a gross understatement. It drills deep into your brain and sits like a lyrical jack-in-the box that goes off every few minutes, causing one to break into song involuntarily to the amusement, or perhaps growing despair, of those nearby.

"Come on ladies, come on ladies, one pound fish! Have a, have a look, one pound fish!" sings Nazir, as he points to his wares behind him. "Very, very good, one pound fish! Very, very cheap, one pound fish!"

In an era in which the Internet seems to bestow almost everyone with 15 minutes of fame, Nazir's YouTube video could have been the end of the story. But Warner Music offered Nazir a deal to record a techno-infused version of "One Pound Fish," he said. In a Bollywood-style video, he performs in a snazzy suit alongside scantily-clad dancers to a South Asian-influenced pop beat.

The music video has been viewed nearly 9 million times since it was posted on YouTube about three weeks ago. As the song gained momentum, people began talking about it as a serious contender for the fabled No. 1 Christmas single in the United Kingdom ? the song that tops the chart in the week the holiday falls. Past chart-toppers include The Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You."

In the end, "One Pound Fish" made it to No. 29 on the top-40 chart. It was beaten by another Internet sensation, PSY's "Gangnam Style," which clocked in at No. 6. The No. 1 spot was clinched by a version of the Hollies' "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" by The Justice Collective, a group of star musicians who recorded the charity single for victims of a stampede at a soccer stadium in 1989 that killed 96 people.

Nazir definitely doesn't view missing out on the No. 1 Christmas single as a setback. He has returned to his home country to get a visa for France for the release of his hit song there and also has plans to take "One Pound Fish" to the United States, where he hopes it will make a big splash.

It has been quite a ride. He grew up in the little-known town of Pattoki near the eastern city of Lahore. His father owned a transport company, but his passion was always music, and he spent his youth singing both religious songs and pop hits by stars like Michael Jackson.

He traveled to Britain to study but eventually got a work permit and started working as a fishmonger in London nine months ago, he said. He now wants to pursue a career in music, but the fish stall in London will always hold a special place in his heart.

"I can't forget England, Queens Market, my fish stall because that place changed my whole life," said Nazir.

Huawei Ascend Mate leaked again ahead of expected CES unveiling

Android Central

Following the first sighting in the wild of Huawei's upcoming 6.1 inch monster phone, the Ascend Mate, the device has been leaked once more ahead of an expected CES unveiling. This time, the device is seen posing for a series of photos alongside -- albeit, only just -- another Huawei device we're expecting to see at CES, the 5 inch D2

The photos obtained by MyDrivers, show what is essentially a big -- really big -- black slab, with on-screen buttons. There appears to be a slight curve to the back of the device, which should make it a little nicer to hold in the hand. If a 6.1 inch smartphone could ever, truly feel nice in the hand. Thickness is supposedly just 9.9mm.

Android Central @ CES

Spec information still remains in the rumor territory at present, but MyDrivers goes on to claim that the Ascend Mate is powered by a quad-core 1.8GHz processor -- likely an in house effort -- 2GB of RAM, a 13MP camera and a 4000mAh battery. Nothing here sounds too out of the ordinary, certainly not for a 2013 release, but until we actually get something official we'll keep the rumor tag on them.

Along with the photos, a leaked advertisement for the Ascend Mate has also been seen. It makes no bones about who Huawei is competing with in this space -- the 5.5 inch Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Samsung has set an extremely high bar in the super sized phone market with the Note and the Note 2, and anyone who considers challenging had better bring their 'A' game. The Note offers a specific experience though, with the S-Pen, whereas at least for the time being, the Ascend Mate just looks like a gargantuan sized version of some of Huawei's other Android smartphones.

Whatever the Ascend Mate may or may not turn out to be, Android Central will be in Las Vegas to bring you all the action as it unfolds.

Divine have produced chocolate bees as a reminder of how vital bees are

But they are under threat, with numbers dropping to dangerous levels ? in Britain they are disappearing faster than anywhere else in Europe.

Consumers can help encourage bees back to Britain by planting wild flowers.

So Divine have teamed up with beehappyplants.co.uk to get consumers four bee-friendly plants for the price of three.

Consumers need to use the promo code they?ll find under the flap on the chocolate bee box and plant some bee-friendly flowers this Spring.

As with all Divine?s products, the honeycomb bees are made from the ?best of the best? cocoa from the co-operative that owns the company.

They are free from artificial flavourings, colourings and preservatives, and are suitable for vegetarians.

House to return to session Sunday evening

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The House will be back in session Sunday evening as the "fiscal cliff" looms, threatening across-the-board tax increases and spending cuts with the new year.

Officials said the Republican leadership informed the GOP rank and file of the plan to meet during a conference call Thursday.

It is unclear what legislation the House might consider Sunday, since Speaker John Boehner is publicly insisting that the Senate must make the next move to avert the cliff.

With the Senate in session, Democrats in both chambers of Congress have been harshly critical of the House's absence.

The "fiscal cliff" deadline is four days away.

The officials who disclosed plans for the Sunday session did so on condition of anonymity, saying no public announcement had yet been made.

Women Reshape German Video Game Industry - Business Insider

Irina Galtsova has to concentrate on what she?s doing. If she makes a mistake, the inhabitants of Bonga Island won?t be able to plant any more palm trees, go fishing, or make pottery. Plus she could ruin the fun for hundreds of thousands of women who love the computer game she designs.

The 29 year-old is a developer for the Hamburg-based computer gaming company Intenium. On average, the company puts a new game on the market every two days. The firm, which employs 90 people ? of which 18 are women ? is one of the largest games providers for female players. In its studios in Hamburg and Kaliningrad, Russia, games are specially developed for women who constitute a rapidly growing target group. Of the 25 million Germans who?regularly play computer games,?11 million are women, according to the German Trade Association of Interactive Entertainment Software (BIU).

In games that are targeted for women ? like?Alamandi,?Lady Popular,?Farmerama?or?Bonga Online?? fighting and shooting have been replaced by?flirting?and craft-making, and players?play with and not against each other. The goal is to find solutions to puzzles and crimes -- and things are created instead of destroyed. The main priority is for the games to offer relaxation and distraction.

From Bigpoint and Wooga to Zynga, nearly all gaming companies employ men to?create digital worlds. Women are the exception on development teams. At least right now ? because gaming companies are actively looking to recruit women. "We need a female influence on development teams," says Christina Barleben, a freelance game designer in Berlin. She intends to open her own studio.

Free Gmail calls in Canada and U.S. extended through 2013

Android Central

Google has been offering Gmail users the ability to call standard phone lines for awhile, and it looks like the service will be continuing through 2013. Americans and Canadians can keep making calls for free, while international users will still have access to reasonable rates.

It's not a huge surprise that the service is continuing, since Google has extended Gmail calling since launching in the summer of 2010. Right now it's still only for desktop, but it sure would be nice to see the feature folded into Android's Google Talk or Voice (for those that have it) at some point.

How often do you guys use Gmail's phone calling service? How much do you figure services like this peeve carriers? Can Google reasonably expect to compete with Skype (and by association Windows Phone) on the VoIP front?

Can compressed fluids increase enzyme activity in industrial bioprocesses?

ScienceDaily (Dec. 7, 2012) ? Enzymes play a crucial role as biocatalysts, increasing the speed and efficiency and decreasing the energy consumption of biochemical reactions in many industrial processes. The advantages of using compressed propane to enhance the biocatalytic activity of an industrial enzyme are described in an article published in Industrial Biotechnology, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers.

This issue of Industrial Biotechnology also includes additional original research articles as well as feature articles that describe the policy and economic issues driving biotechnology development in South America and potential regulatory challenges for biobased chemicals in the US.

"Authors contributing to this issue of Industrial Biotechnology represent the international dimension of the bioeconomy and the need to capture insights and innovations from around the globe," says Larry Walker, PhD, Co-Editor-in-Chief and Professor, Biological & Environmental Engineering, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY.

Marceli Fernandes Silva and colleagues from Brazil (Universidade Regional Integrada and Federal University of Fronteira Sul, Erechim; Federal University of Santa Catarina, Florian?polis and Santa Maria; and Federal University of Rio Grande) studied inulinase, an enzyme used in the food industry. In the article "Pressurized Propane: An Alternative Technique to Increase Inulinase Activity," the authors explored the potential advantages of using compressed fluids such as propane to enhance enzyme-driven biotransformation reactions. The extent to which propane affected inulinase activity depended on enzyme structure and the experimental conditions.

Another Original Research article in the Journal, by Ewumbua M. Monono and coauthors from North Dakota State University, Fargo, described models capable of predicting the chemical composition of perennial plants that will likely be important future sources of cellulosic feedstock for biofuels production. They present their work in the article "Developing and Evaluating NIR Calibration Models for Multi-Species Herbaceous Perennials."

The issue also includes the Policy Forum entitled "Despite Serious Challenges, South America's Potential in Biotechnology Cannot be Eclipsed," (http://online.liebertpub.com/doi/full/10.1089/ind.2012.1538) in which authors Ricardo Camargo Mendes and Caio Jacon, Prospectiva Consulting, S?o Paulo, Brazil, present a compelling overview of the promise and challenges that lie ahead for industrial biotechnology development in South America, with an emphasis on Brazil.

Attorney Lynn Bergeson and coauthors from Bergeson & Campbell, PC and The Acta Group, Washington, DC, and Charles Auer & Associated, LLC, Poolesville, MD, offer an in-depth discussion of how and why the Toxic Substances Control Act might apply to the commercialization of biobased chemicals in the Commentary entitled "TSCA and the Regulation of Renewable Chemicals."

Rihanna Hangs With Anne Hathaway In 'Saturday Night Live - Idolator

Things get a little awkward in the promos for?Saturday (November 9)?s episode of?Saturday Night Live, which features?Anne Hathaway?as the host and?Rihanna?as the musical guest. Naturally, they both appear in the teasers for the episode: In the first, there?s a brief moment of tension when it comes out that?Rihanna has appeared on the show more times than Hathaway; in the second, Hathaway wants to swap outfits with RiRi, but the ?Diamonds? chanteuse isn?t so down.

Ultimately, both promo clips just seem to be saying the same thing: Rihanna is the best. You?ll find no argument here. Watch the clips up top.

JetBlue pilot who had midair meltdown to leave prison

1 hr.

SAN ANTONIO -- The JetBlue Airways pilot whose behavior on a flight forced the plane to make an emergency landing in Texas was ordered conditionally released by a federal judge in Amarillo, Texas, on Friday.

U.S. District Judge Mary Lou Robinson ruled Clayton Osbon, 49, "would not create a substantial risk of bodily injury to another person or serious damage to the property of another" if released.

Osbon pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in July to a criminal charge of interference with a flight crew and was ordered examined by psychiatrists for the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. A judge ruled him not guilty by reason of insanity and Osbon was sent to the Federal Medical Center in Butner, N.C.

On a March 27 flight from New York City to Las Vegas, Osbon began running through the aisles of the plane screaming about Iraq, Iran and al-Qaida, yelling, "We're not going to Vegas" and "You'd better start praying now!" An FBI report says the first officer on the flight managed to lock Osbon out of the cabin while passengers subdued him and another pilot made the decision to land in Amarillo.

A psychiatrist later attributed the incident to a brief psychiatric disorder brought on by lack of sleep, according to court documents.

Robinson set out a number of conditions for Osbon's release, including a stipulation that he not board a plane without court permission. He also is prohibited from communicating with anyone who was on board the JetBlue flight. He is forbidden from purchasing alcohol, using any controlled substances and must follow the psychological care recommended by his physicians.

Osbon will be released after his lawyers and federal prosecutors agree on a date. Robinson said in her written order that neither federal prosecutors nor the government objected to his release.

Osbon could have received up to 20 years in prison or been committed to a mental health facility.

Several passengers on board the flight have sued the airline, claiming JetBlue should have known that Osbon was not fit to fly that day.

Changing times: Politicians' tears more common now

In this still image from a BarackObama.com campaign video, President Barack Obama wipes away tears as he thanks members of his campaign staff and volunteers in Chicago, Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012. The short speech came a day after he won re-election. The president talks about his work as a community organizer in Chicago and tells staffers and volunteers that they will do "amazing things" in their lives. Obama becomes emotional when he says that even before the election results, he felt the work he had done "had come full circle." He tells staff members that he is proud of the work they did, then pauses to wipe away tears. (AP PhotoBarackObama.com)

FILE This Sunday, March 4, 2012 file photo shows Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who claimed victory in Russia's presidential election, with tears running down his face up as he reacts at a massive rally of his supporters at Manezh square outside Kremlin, in Moscow. It seems a strange sight: The president of the United States, sometimes called the most powerful person in the world, breaking down in tears thanking campaign workers for their tireless _ and ultimately successful _ work on his behalf. But Barack Obama isn't the only world leader unashamed or unable to avoid being seen crying in public. Putin is a judo fan and hunting aficionado known in part for his physical fitness. Muskie's emotional speech came as he campaigned for the New Hampshire primary and the Democratic presidential nomination, which slid off the tracks after it was reported that he had cried in response to the newspaper's attack on his wife. Muskie sustained until his death that it had been melted snowflakes, not a tear, in his eye. It seems a strange sight: The president of the United States, sometimes called the most powerful person in the world, breaking down in tears thanking campaign workers for their tireless _ and ultimately successful _ work on his behalf. FILE This Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010 file photo shows House Republican leader John Boehner of Ohio with tears in his eyes as he celebrates the GOP's victory that changes the balance of power in Congress and will likely elevate him to speaker of the House, during an election night gathering hosted by the National Republican Congressional Committee at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Washington. It seems out of place: The president of the United States breaking down in tears as he thanked campaign workers for their tireless work for his re-election.

But Barack Obama isn't the only world leader unashamed to be seen crying in public ? or simply unable to avoid it. Attitudes seem to have changed since the early 1970s, when an alleged crying incident during the presidential primary season went a long way toward derailing the candidacy of a Maine senator.

The teary trend has picked up speed in recent years, or perhaps it has just been noticed more often because of ubiquitous TV, still and cellphone cameras. Here are some recent examples:

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

Victorious in his re-election campaign, Obama cried while giving a speech to his campaign staff and volunteers. He told the gathered young people there was no limit to what they could accomplish. The speech touched on his start as a community organizer in Chicago and reflected his faith that his young volunteers and staff would accomplish great things in the decades to come.

It was an emotional side of Obama that had rarely been visible during the long, often negative, campaign.

EVEN STRONG MEN CRY

Russian President Vladimir Putin is a judo fan and hunting aficionado known in part for his physical fitness. But that didn't stop him from welling up in March after he was returned to power in a difficult election battle marred by public protests. It was a break with Kremlin tradition in a country where leaders are rarely seen to show emotions.

A defiant Putin proclaimed that he and his followers had beaten back opponents determined to destroy Russia's statehood and usurp power.

The tears were ridiculed by his political opponents and drew some sarcastic comments from political foes in the United States, but did not seem to harm his standing.

NOT READY TO LEAVE

She was known as a strong, even imperious leader who thrived on power politics and led Britain in the war to recover the Falklands Islands. But the enduring image of Margaret Thatcher's departure from office is the tearful face captured by photographers in 1990 as she left 10 Downing Street for the last time.

The "iron lady" was removed as party leader and prime minister after 11 years in power and replaced by John Major. The crying incident is remembered as offering a rare glimpse into her personal feelings, which were typically kept far from public view.

GOODBYE, MAN FROM MAINE

Maine Sen. Edmund Muskie was a front-runner in the race for the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination until he appeared to break down while defending his wife from an attack by an influential New Hampshire newspaper.

Muskie always claimed it was snowflakes, not tears, but the damage had been done. His supposed crying was perceived as a show of weakness and instability, and his campaign never recovered. His rival, Sen. George McGovern, won the nomination, but was later trounced by President Richard Nixon. Although Muskie's presidential hopes were dashed, he later became Secretary of State under President Jimmy Carter.

THE WEEPER OF THE HOUSE

As Speaker of the House, Republican John Boehner holds one of the most powerful positions in the U.S. government ? and he cries so frequently that Twitter jokesters have taken to calling him the weeper of the house. He tears up easily, particularly when talking about the American dream.

He's been known to cry at school events or when fielding questions from constituents or when talking about his family. A well-watched YouTube clip captures him choking up with tears when talking about the need to combat terrorism and provide safety and security for Americans.

Pokemon: We Won't Lose!

There are but twelve humans who were chosen to be children of Arceus. All of whom will be saviors and guardians to Pok?mon and human alike. Near the days when a terrible evil shall threaten all, these Chosen will be gathered to realize their destinies.

The Chosen Ones
Humans with a hand-given destiny by Arceus to save the world.

The Dreams
Since they were small children, they have had strange dreams. Dreams that were nothing more than fleeting glimpses of colorful and glowing shardsImage and even the Sword of Vale. They've had visions of Arceus and a strange world where there are creatures that resemble Pokemon, but none of the Pokemon that they've ever seen.

Team Mystic
The "evil" side of the war, apparently. They want to capture The Chosen Ones to help them recruit Pokemon and find Arceus' treasures.

The War
Team Mystic has been using their Pok?mon to abuse humans and mutants alike, greedy for rare Pok?mon and treasures. They've recently discovered information regarding the Mystic Shards and The Chosen Ones and now seek to possess them. Their abuse has grown as they stop at nothing to find these Chosen Ones.

Arceus Treasures
The very last shards, larger than the rest. Its rumored that they can create new Pok?mon and even open doors to other dimensions. Hidden by Arceus - Only the Chosen Ones have an idea of where they could be. They ofen have dreams showing fleeting images of the shards' whereabouts. There is also the Sword of the Vale of which Team Mystic wishes to use to control the Dragon Force. No-one knows where it is now, but the Chosen Ones often see fleeting glimpses of it in their dreams just as much as the Mystic Shards.

Pokemon
The Chosen Ones can only capture Pokemon that correspond with their Type. For now. They have an intense bond with Pokemon of their Type and literally have never felt the need to capture a Pokemon of any other Type. The ability to capture other Pokemon Types will be introduced soon - With a light twist. What happens if they try to capture a Pokemon not their Type, you ask? Their Pokeball simply won't work at all. What happens if their Pokemon will evolve into something that isn't their corresponding type anymore? They won't evolve. The trainer can choose to let it evolve, but they will no longer own it - The Ownership seal from the Pokeball will break.

Communication
All Chosen Ones can use telepathy with their Pok?mon and Pokemon that they've established a strong bond with. Chosen Ones can understand all Pok?mon when they speak - Not just their own. They can also feel their Pokemon's emotions as their Pokemon can feel their trainer's as well.
