300 Mormons march in Utah Gay Pride Parade

(AP) SALT LAKE CITY - More than 300 Mormon church members who are not gay drew shouts of approval and tears from spectators while marching in the Utah Gay Pride Parade in downtown Salt Lake City.

The Mormons say they sought to send a message of love to Utah's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community by joining the annual parade Sunday. Their participation marked the first time such a large group of Mormons took part in the parade, organizers said.

The Mormons, dressed in their Sunday best, included fathers carrying their children on their shoulders and mothers pushing strollers, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

Nevin Munson, 13, carried a sign that said: "Love thy neighbor as thyself."

"I'm very saddened by the amount of hate in the world," he said, adding discrimination against gays and lesbians exists around the world. "I don't believe in that ? they're humans."

Emily Vandyke, 50, carried a sign with the words from a Mormon children's song: "I'll walk with you, I'll talk with you. That's how I'll show my love for you."

Along the parade route, she embraced a weeping woman who said, "Thank you."

"I haven't recognized them as equals," Vandyke told the Tribune. "They have been invisible to me."

While the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not consider same-sex attraction a sin, it only regards sexual relations within the marriage of a man and a woman as acceptable.

Some spectators said their homosexuality caused them to leave the church, and they might have remained members had the faith been more tolerant.

"I lost everything I loved because I came out," said Carolyn Ball, a 48-year-old lesbian from West Jordan.

The participation of the church members was organized by a newly formed group calling itself Mormons Building Bridges.

Erika Munson, the group's founder and a mother of five from Sandy, said the success of the event reflected the "deep wounds" in the community. Organizers hope it marks the beginning of a grassroots movement, she added.

"We want to inspire other Mormons at the local level to do things for their LGBT brothers and sisters," Munson said.

Once personal bankruptcy petitions are filed through the court, debtors are required to submit their proposed payment plan to the court for approval.

Petitioners attend a 341 creditor meeting which provides opportunity to meet face-to-face with creditors. Creditors can elect to reduce outstanding balances, remove penalties or late fees, or lower interest rates. Once debtors and creditors agree upon owed debt amounts they appear in court to present the debt refinance plan.

Once filed, debtors must begin remitting payments to the Trustee within 30 days. This must occur whether the payment plan is approved or not. Payments are remitted to the court on a monthly or bi-monthly schedule. Trustees distribute payments to creditors based on priority status.

Illinois Lawmakers Approve More Casinos ? CBS St. Louis

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) ?Illinois lawmakers have approved a major expansion of legalized gambling for the second year in a row. But there?s little indication last year?s roadblock Gov. Pat Quinn is willing to let it through this time.

The Senate voted 30-26 late Thursday in favor of a proposal that would create five new casinos a land-based site in Chicago and four more on riverboats.

The bill could produce at least $300 million in tax revenue for the state annually. Proponents say that could go as high as $1 billion a year, not counting a one-time infusion of more than $1 billion from licensing and a special tax.

Critics argued that the state gambling market is saturated and that new casinos would just take business from the 10 existing ones approved two decades ago.
But the state is already losing to other states, said Sen. Dave Syverson, a Republican from Rockford, which would get one of the boats.
?Illinois is under attack economically,? Syverson said. ?There are five states around us that are working ad nauseam to take our jobs, take our tourism dollars, and frankly, they?ve been successful doing that.?

The measure would create the state?s first nonfloating casino in what promises to be a tourist jewel for Chicago. Besides Rockford, riverboat casinos would go in Danville, Park City north of Chicago and at a yet-to-be-determined site in the south suburbs of Chicago.

Senate President John Cullerton, D-Chicago, flatly predicted Quinn will veto the bill. He said senators would then pass another version of the measure.
The Legislature adopted a similar measure last year but never sent it to Quinn because he said he?d veto it. Backers said they included 8 of the 12 ideas Quinn suggested for improvement over last year?s version. But when the new model won House approval last week, Quinn called it weak, with too little oversight and too much opportunity for political corruption.

?If you have more gambling, you?ll have more revenue, more slots, more casinos and more jobs, but you?ll also have more bankruptcies, more suicides, more gambling addicts, more child abuse ?,? said Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon. ?If you want `more,? then vote for this bill.?

Scott Eisenhauer, mayor of Danville on the Indiana border, said his community already has its share of crime and poverty it?s unable to combat.
?This at least gives us some of those financial resources that social agencies need in order to combat some of these challenges,? Eisenhauer said.
