Rihanna Hangs With Anne Hathaway In 'Saturday Night Live - Idolator

Things get a little awkward in the promos for?Saturday (November 9)?s episode of?Saturday Night Live, which features?Anne Hathaway?as the host and?Rihanna?as the musical guest. Naturally, they both appear in the teasers for the episode: In the first, there?s a brief moment of tension when it comes out that?Rihanna has appeared on the show more times than Hathaway; in the second, Hathaway wants to swap outfits with RiRi, but the ?Diamonds? chanteuse isn?t so down.

Ultimately, both promo clips just seem to be saying the same thing: Rihanna is the best. You?ll find no argument here. Watch the clips up top.

JetBlue pilot who had midair meltdown to leave prison

1 hr.

SAN ANTONIO -- The JetBlue Airways pilot whose behavior on a flight forced the plane to make an emergency landing in Texas was ordered conditionally released by a federal judge in Amarillo, Texas, on Friday.

U.S. District Judge Mary Lou Robinson ruled Clayton Osbon, 49, "would not create a substantial risk of bodily injury to another person or serious damage to the property of another" if released.

Osbon pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in July to a criminal charge of interference with a flight crew and was ordered examined by psychiatrists for the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. A judge ruled him not guilty by reason of insanity and Osbon was sent to the Federal Medical Center in Butner, N.C.

On a March 27 flight from New York City to Las Vegas, Osbon began running through the aisles of the plane screaming about Iraq, Iran and al-Qaida, yelling, "We're not going to Vegas" and "You'd better start praying now!" An FBI report says the first officer on the flight managed to lock Osbon out of the cabin while passengers subdued him and another pilot made the decision to land in Amarillo.

A psychiatrist later attributed the incident to a brief psychiatric disorder brought on by lack of sleep, according to court documents.

Robinson set out a number of conditions for Osbon's release, including a stipulation that he not board a plane without court permission. He also is prohibited from communicating with anyone who was on board the JetBlue flight. He is forbidden from purchasing alcohol, using any controlled substances and must follow the psychological care recommended by his physicians.

Osbon will be released after his lawyers and federal prosecutors agree on a date. Robinson said in her written order that neither federal prosecutors nor the government objected to his release.

Osbon could have received up to 20 years in prison or been committed to a mental health facility.

Several passengers on board the flight have sued the airline, claiming JetBlue should have known that Osbon was not fit to fly that day.

Changing times: Politicians' tears more common now

In this still image from a BarackObama.com campaign video, President Barack Obama wipes away tears as he thanks members of his campaign staff and volunteers in Chicago, Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012. The short speech came a day after he won re-election. The president talks about his work as a community organizer in Chicago and tells staffers and volunteers that they will do "amazing things" in their lives. Obama becomes emotional when he says that even before the election results, he felt the work he had done "had come full circle." He tells staff members that he is proud of the work they did, then pauses to wipe away tears. (AP PhotoBarackObama.com)

Muskie sustained until his death that it had been melted snowflakes, not a tear, in his eye. It seems out of place: The president of the United States breaking down in tears as he thanked campaign workers for their tireless work for his re-election.

But Barack Obama isn't the only world leader unashamed to be seen crying in public ? or simply unable to avoid it. Attitudes seem to have changed since the early 1970s, when an alleged crying incident during the presidential primary season went a long way toward derailing the candidacy of a Maine senator.

The teary trend has picked up speed in recent years, or perhaps it has just been noticed more often because of ubiquitous TV, still and cellphone cameras. Here are some recent examples:

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

Victorious in his re-election campaign, Obama cried while giving a speech to his campaign staff and volunteers. He told the gathered young people there was no limit to what they could accomplish. The speech touched on his start as a community organizer in Chicago and reflected his faith that his young volunteers and staff would accomplish great things in the decades to come.

It was an emotional side of Obama that had rarely been visible during the long, often negative, campaign.

EVEN STRONG MEN CRY

Russian President Vladimir Putin is a judo fan and hunting aficionado known in part for his physical fitness. But that didn't stop him from welling up in March after he was returned to power in a difficult election battle marred by public protests. It was a break with Kremlin tradition in a country where leaders are rarely seen to show emotions.

A defiant Putin proclaimed that he and his followers had beaten back opponents determined to destroy Russia's statehood and usurp power.

The tears were ridiculed by his political opponents and drew some sarcastic comments from political foes in the United States, but did not seem to harm his standing.

NOT READY TO LEAVE

She was known as a strong, even imperious leader who thrived on power politics and led Britain in the war to recover the Falklands Islands. But the enduring image of Margaret Thatcher's departure from office is the tearful face captured by photographers in 1990 as she left 10 Downing Street for the last time.

The "iron lady" was removed as party leader and prime minister after 11 years in power and replaced by John Major. The crying incident is remembered as offering a rare glimpse into her personal feelings, which were typically kept far from public view.

GOODBYE, MAN FROM MAINE

Maine Sen. Edmund Muskie was a front-runner in the race for the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination until he appeared to break down while defending his wife from an attack by an influential New Hampshire newspaper.

Muskie always claimed it was snowflakes, not tears, but the damage had been done. His supposed crying was perceived as a show of weakness and instability, and his campaign never recovered. His rival, Sen. George McGovern, won the nomination, but was later trounced by President Richard Nixon. Although Muskie's presidential hopes were dashed, he later became Secretary of State under President Jimmy Carter.

THE WEEPER OF THE HOUSE

As Speaker of the House, Republican John Boehner holds one of the most powerful positions in the U.S. government ? and he cries so frequently that Twitter jokesters have taken to calling him the weeper of the house. He tears up easily, particularly when talking about the American dream.

He's been known to cry at school events or when fielding questions from constituents or when talking about his family. A well-watched YouTube clip captures him choking up with tears when talking about the need to combat terrorism and provide safety and security for Americans.

Pokemon: We Won't Lose!

There are but twelve humans who were chosen to be children of Arceus. All of whom will be saviors and guardians to Pok?mon and human alike. Near the days when a terrible evil shall threaten all, these Chosen will be gathered to realize their destinies.

The Chosen Ones
Humans with a hand-given destiny by Arceus to save the world.

The Dreams
Since they were small children, they have had strange dreams. Dreams that were nothing more than fleeting glimpses of colorful and glowing shardsImage and even the Sword of Vale. They've had visions of Arceus and a strange world where there are creatures that resemble Pokemon, but none of the Pokemon that they've ever seen.

Team Mystic
The "evil" side of the war, apparently. They want to capture The Chosen Ones to help them recruit Pokemon and find Arceus' treasures.

The War
Team Mystic has been using their Pok?mon to abuse humans and mutants alike, greedy for rare Pok?mon and treasures. They've recently discovered information regarding the Mystic Shards and The Chosen Ones and now seek to possess them. Their abuse has grown as they stop at nothing to find these Chosen Ones.

Arceus Treasures
The very last shards, larger than the rest. Its rumored that they can create new Pok?mon and even open doors to other dimensions. Hidden by Arceus - Only the Chosen Ones have an idea of where they could be. They ofen have dreams showing fleeting images of the shards' whereabouts. There is also the Sword of the Vale of which Team Mystic wishes to use to control the Dragon Force. No-one knows where it is now, but the Chosen Ones often see fleeting glimpses of it in their dreams just as much as the Mystic Shards.

Pokemon
The Chosen Ones can only capture Pokemon that correspond with their Type. For now. They have an intense bond with Pokemon of their Type and literally have never felt the need to capture a Pokemon of any other Type. The ability to capture other Pokemon Types will be introduced soon - With a light twist. What happens if they try to capture a Pokemon not their Type, you ask? Their Pokeball simply won't work at all. What happens if their Pokemon will evolve into something that isn't their corresponding type anymore? They won't evolve. The trainer can choose to let it evolve, but they will no longer own it - The Ownership seal from the Pokeball will break.

Communication
All Chosen Ones can use telepathy with their Pok?mon and Pokemon that they've established a strong bond with. Chosen Ones can understand all Pok?mon when they speak - Not just their own. They can also feel their Pokemon's emotions as their Pokemon can feel their trainer's as well.

Home made baby gifts from The Southern Institute.

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed, and make sure to follow The Southern Institute on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest too!

My step-sister is having her first baby, a baby boy! ?Last weekend she had a baby shower, and although I swore I would never shop off of the registry for baby showers, I had to make something handmade for my little nephew to be. ?Baby gifts can be so much fun to make because there are so many things that are needed, plus all of those cute little things that aren?t that you just can?t resist. ?I?ve been wanting to try the Lucy?s Kimono pattern from Heather Ross?s Weekend Sewing book for quite some time now, so I went for it. ?Who says it has to be for girls just because it?s called Lucy?s Kimono, right?

The pattern was easy enough, the instructions left a little to be desired, and I had to tweak a bit, but I think this turned out to be just darling. ?The fabric is from the?Boys Will Be Boys?line by David Walker and Free Spirit. ?I chose it because it was boyish, but not too babyish, and not too cutesy. ?I?m not a fan of cutesy baby boy things at all. ?With homemade off-white binding (I added the binding on the bottom hem) I think it looks very elegant. ?It?s the details that make it special?

?

I had some fabric left over and wanted to do something more. ?Knowing what the color scheme is in the baby?s room, blue and brown, I thought I could incorporate the leftover fabric somehow, so I started scouring the internet for some ideas. ?I found a cute little framed picture that said ?Owl Love You For Always?, but for the life f me I cannot find it now or I would link to it! ?Anyway, it was my inspiration for this freezer-paper-stencil-turned-art for the nursery.

I used my Silhouette to cut the text directly onto freezer paper. ?I found the owls image online and traced it, then filled in the rest of the tree myself! ?It was a lot of fun.

Mom-to-be LOVED the baby gifts! ?The art is waiting for the baby?s arrival, and so are we. ?We?re anxiously awaiting meeting this sweet new member of our family! ?We are so excited!

What are your go-to baby gifts when you have a shower to attend?
What was the most meaningful baby shower gift you ever got?

So What If Ayala Enters the Retail Convenience Store Business ...

I had an interesting discussion in one of the FB groups I was added to. For the most part, I just skim through the posts. However, there was a question that was raised which interested me because it echoed the sentiments of those who are in favor of protectionism. The question goes like this:

Is the 60-40 ownership limitation on foreigners the only hindrance to a great Philippines? Why not fight give the ordinary Filipinos a fighting chance. Why not lobby for laws that will empower the poor and the middle class. Foreign investors will not be our saviors, they will just add a little to the number of elites running our country. If we let them in will they fight for the ordinary Filipinos or just join with the Philippines? richest and become part of the Philippines new oligarchs.

The short answer is this ? if we are indeed to give Filipinos a fighting chance and empower the poor and the middle class, we need to remove the 60/40 economic restrictions which keep jobs and goods and services of better value away from the poor and the middle class.

Protected Filipino companies are corporate parasites that live off on consumers? restricted choices imposed by a corrupt Philippine government.

Foreign investors are not necessarily ?saviors? because there can be rotten foreign investors inasmuch as there can also be excellent foreign investors. The ?savior ? is not the foreign investor per se ? but the free and open market which allows consumers to exercise their choice of walking away from business that don?t deliver value. Under a free and open market ? investors local and foreign will not become entrenched because consumers always have alternatives when businesses no longer deliver value.

On the other hand ? a 60/40 regulation which mandates that foreigners must partner with local businesses ? ensures that foreign investors are assimilated by the Filipino elite ? who under the law will retain 60% control of the business. In effect, the foreign investor is made to subsidize the operations of the local Filipino elite ? at the expense of Filipino consumers.

The discussion continued and this point was raised:

As far as i can remember, Filipino consumers have favored imported products and we ascribe quality with the country the are made in. Of course, Made in the USA for Filipinos equals Quality and we don?t mind how expensive. The same goes for products from western Europe. In Asia, Made in Japan also means quality. That is the perception of many Filipinos. Made in Taiwan is a little different. There was a time when Filipinos consumers think that products made in Taiwan are poorly made and and inferior to Made in Japan. Over time, that changed. Now Made in China products are at the bottom although almost everything now is made in China including the beloved Apple product lines (iPhone, iPad, etc?)

Regardless of perception, Filipino consumers buy according to their budget. Filipinos with less budget would be happy to have MyPhone, Torque, etc. while those who have more would choose brands like Nokia, Apple, Motorola etc?

DO Filipinos have limited choices? I think not. I can see more brand of products available to the Filipino consumers than to Swiss consumers in Switzerland for example.

To which I replied, Telecom .. How many choices? 3? Globe , PLDT, and Bayantel.

South Korea telecom .. How many choices? 40?

Retail chains. How many choices? Which lead to the question that really got the ball rolling:

Do you really think we need more malls in the Philippines?

The question was timely considering that Ayala just convinced Itochu of Japan to subsidize Ayala?s Philippine operations.

With that said, let me get straight to the meat of the matter. First off, before anything else we need to distinguish between consumers and producers/suppliers.

The Filipino Consumers? Point of View

Ask yourself, what?s the impact to you the consumer when your choices are limited to lousy and lousier and both are expensive?
Do you think the goods offered in Filipino owned malls are sufficient? And priced competitively? How would you know if you keep competitors out?
If foreigners sell goods at lower rates to Filipino consumers.. thus allowing savings to Filipino consumers ? will it hurt Filipino consumers or does it benefit Filipino consumers because they have more money to spend for other stuff?Do Filipino consumers come first if their choices are restricted to buying from Filipino owned businesses only?

Are all Filipinos business owners? Should Filipino consumers choices be limited to Filipino owned businesses that sell foreign made goods?

Why should government restrictions decide for Filipino consumers that they should buy from Filipino businesses and the limited value provided to consumers?

Why should Filipino consumers be deprived of the value which makes sense to them? So that Ayala (and his shareholders which include the Aquinos, Cojuangcos, the Makati Business Corporatists) can make humongous profits from a captive market? Is that right?

?The Filipino Entrepreneurs? Point of View

If a small Filipino business is willing to have 40% equity only, why should they be stopped from doing so?

Filipinos can be investors too. They need to have all options available on deck. Why should their options be limited to 60% equity only ? what if they don?t have the money to raise the 60% ? echepwera na lang?

If Filipino entrepreneurs can only meet 20% in fund equity, convert their sweat equity into 20% , a blend of foreign investors to come up with 60% ? why should Filipino entrepreneurs be prevented from doing so?

?

The Foreign Investors? Point of View

Doing business is about profit based on providing value to consumers.

Why should foreign investors be forced to share their? revenue with a Filipino partner?

Do you really need a Filipino partner when you can roll out your own operation without needing a partner?

And speaking of greed ? what makes you think the Filipino partner is not greedy?

The Issue of Cost and Price

The discussion then ventured into the issue of cost. The question was

?If P&G or Unilever was established in the Philippines as 100% foreign owned company, will it lower the prices of their products?

So how are they better than the oligarchs? but wait? In fact they are already part of the oligarchy.

I answered the question with another question- If P&G has to compete with other foreign competitors (and local competitors) and doesn?t have to give a cut to a Filipino partner.. will they increase prices?

Note production cost is only one component. There are other components of the sales price:

  • a) After sales service
  • b) Financing terms ? layaways, inhouse credit cards
  • c) Customer service at point of sale
  • d) Convenience of the shopping experience
  • f) The total landed cost ? the choice of suppliers, production, shippers, warehouses, distribution centers, the taxes and fees you had to pay

The sale prices bear the unique imprint of all these factors.

?The Filipino Job-Seekers Point of View

If foreigners operate retail chains in the Philippines, they hire Filipino workers do they not?

Now let?s look at how these protected Filipino owned retailers treat their workers? Look at the treatment of workers in Shoemart / Glorietta / Robinsons / Ayala / Gaisano ( all Filipino-owned by the way) ? 20 years working for the company ? temporary status pa rin. They are laid off every five months ? so they don?t become permanent employees ? with the blessing of the Department of Labor at that. The DOLE?s reason? Because there aren?t enough jobs then the jobs should be shared between the laborers instead of opening the market so more providers can absorb the excess capacity ? unbelibaboy.

So here comes a foreign company who is willing to provide employment for Filipino workers ? and hire them to become full-time employees with all the benefits ? but the 60/40 economic restrictions prevent the Filipino job seekers from enjoying full time employment. Why should Filipino workers be prevented from having better paying jobs? Why should they be made to put up with the ?endo? of Shoemart and Ayala huh?

The retort was

?How sure are you that they will not do the same as the local businesses that you mentioned. Remember, for capitalist, profit is the most important thing. They will loose their advantage if they do not do what the competitors are doing which is not illegal. If you really want to help the workers, start a campaign to end contractualization of employment. A law that makes contractualization illegal would ensure protection of employees from ANY employer.

What makes you so sure they will do the same as the local business? :)

To increase market share ? foreign investors will differentiate from local businesses ? that?s called the USP ? Unique Selling Proposition.

The foreign competitor will study the business model of the local competition. For instance the ? perpetual temporary employees leads to : demoralized work force, low productivity, high turnover, high service failures ? which leads to unsatisfied customers. On the other hand ? the company which has a mix of full time employees have more motivated employees, have low turnover, high service excellence ? which translates into satisfied customers ? which turns into revenue ? and bigger market share.

The Issue of Contractualization

Making contractualization illegal will only stop businesses from investing further ? and will lead to loss of jobs. Business should be allowed to do what makes sense to them ? in the end it?s the consumer who decides which business will survive ? and which will go extinct. Business Process Outsourcing aka BPO is contractualization of the jobs in overseas firms to Philippine firms. It?s amusing that folks will demonize local contractualization but line up for jobs in BPO firms.?Cool

Business process outsourcing boils down to this ? focus on your core strengths. Areas which are not your core strength and where you don?t have a competitive advantage will be a source of revenue loss. Therefore, it will be better to have those companies which do an excellent job at the things where you are not competitive. Allowing the continuation of unproductive activities will reduce your revenue and in the long term can lead you to close shop. The bottom line is this ? businesses that don?t provide value will lose consumers ? a free market will make them bankrupt as consumers choose those companies that bring more bang for the buck. A protected market however does not leave consumers any choice but to put up and keep on buying from these corporate parasites.

It?s About the Economy, Student

If the laws are detrimental to foreign and local investors ? and Filipino consumers ? such that more investment and jobs are being created outside of the Philippines. Shouldn?t we be asking ourselves ? why aren?t those businesses and jobs being created here? What can be done to reverse the situation?

We keep foreign investments out ? then we send our workers to work in foreign lands. Then Noynoy brags about the foreign remittances. Meanwhile Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia opens its doors to foreign investments ? and make more money than we do without having to send their workers in harms way overseas. Do you see nothing wrong with that?

Empowering Filipinos means removing the restrictions on their choices. Filipino consumers and job seekers should have the freedom them to choose between local or foreign businesses ? whoever provides them better value ? and not limited to Filipino businesses only. ?How can you be empowered when your choices are limited? That does not make sense.? Restriction is not empowerment.

So, to answer the main question, Filipino consumers and job-seekers should not expect any new benefit from? Ayala?s entrance into the retail convenience store ? it will be the same bullshit. Ayala?s parasitical business model will continue to live off on Filipino job-seekers and taxpayers, pendejo. Laughing

Quake hits off Guatemalan coast, felt in Mexico City

GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) - A strong earthquake off the coast of Guatemala on Wednesday shook buildings in Guatemala City and San Salvador and was felt as far away as Mexico City, Reuters witnesses said.

Firefighters said eight people were injured when a building collapsed in San Marcos, 101 miles west-southwest of the capital, but there were no immediate reports of fatalities.

Landslides were blocking roads in some areas, they added.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no widespread tsunami threat from the quake, which occurred at 10:35 a.m. (1635 GMT).

The magnitude 7.4 quake struck off the Central American nation's Pacific coast, 15 miles south of Champerico, Guatemala, near the border with Mexico, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter was 26 miles below the surface, according to the USGS. It initially reported the quake as magnitude 7.5.

A Reuters witness in Guatemala City said people were evacuating residences in parts of the capital, and firefighters and rescue workers were on alert.

"It was really big, I felt quite nauseous," said secretary Vanessa Castillo, 32, who was evacuated from her 10th-floor office in Guatemala City.

Hundreds of people were on the streets making phone calls to friends and family.

Office workers were also hurrying out of buildings in Mexico City. Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said the quake was felt strongly in a large part of the city of 20 million people.

"There are evacuations in various parts of the city," he said via Twitter.

DIY Tutorial: Family Room Chest | Goodwill Industries of NNE

November 6th, 2012 @ 6:00 am | Posted to | Written by Gail DiBiase

Dear readers,

Sometimes you need that one piece of furniture to complete a room. Gail from Glam Girls Pretties had a vision for her family?s fun room and the final piece that drew the room together was an old pine chest that she and her family worked on together. Part storage piece, part game table, she was able to turn a functional chest into the centerpiece of the room that held and continues to hold family memories ? what pieces of furniture in your home hold meaning for you?

DIY Tutorial: Family Room Chest

I am excited to share with you a project in which my family turned an old pine chest into our coffee/ game table and family craft box.

A few years ago, we moved into a house with a huge cozy room with a wood stove in one corner. We all instantly loved this room. Frankie, the kids and I had decided we would call it the ?Fun Room.? It would be the place in our home where we could watch movies, eat popcorn, play games and come together as a family to enjoy life.? A room where our art, as well as mementos from each family member?s joyous moments, would also cover our walls.

We already owned a red leather futon, which was perfect for a family fun room. We found a big rag rug at a discount store. Now I wanted to find or make some sort of coffee table. I happened to own a old large handmade pine chest that I thought would work great in the fun room ? it would make a great coffee /game table as well as a place to put our craft supplies. Crafting fun is huge at our house! The idea I came up with was that we would decoupage the top of the chest with pictures of our family and on the sides we would stamp our hand prints all over it.

I found many pictures and had many digital pictures made into print.

We began by arranging the picture on the top of the chest, cutting them carefully to create a collage. I then applied Mod Podge (you can use any decoupage finish) to the back of each picture and glued them in place. I also brushed the top of all the photos with the Mod Podge and smoothed out any bubbles. I then applied two more coats of over the entire top. I know it looks scary at first but it does dry opaque. We let that dry a few days.

Next it was time to do some stamping with our hands; dipping our hand in different colored paint we stamped our hand prints and finger prints all over the chest.? I would say we had some fun doing that!

The box came out fabulous and I made some big red and white floral floor pillows to sit on.

Our box now sits in our ?Fun Room.? It is funny, but all who visit our home enjoy looking at the chest with those pictures from a few years ago. The kids have grown so much it is unbelievable. This chest is so special to all of us and we will always remember the days when we created it together!
