Michael Bradley relishes Italy test for the US

MILAN (AP) -Midfielder Michael Bradley knows from experience just how tough of a test the United States is in for when it takes on Italy in a friendly on Wednesday.
But that's exactly what the Americans are looking for ahead of the start of their World Cup qualifying campaign in June.
"It will be a very difficult game for us," said Bradley, who plays in Italy with Chievo Verona. "Italy has a squad that's full of champions and for us it will be a good test."
The U.S. doesn't seem interested in getting easy victories to boost the players' confidence ahead of their opening qualifier against Antigua and Barbuda, having scheduled a series of difficult games instead that will provide a more realistic picture of their qualities. After Italy, the Americans will host Scotland and Brazil in May.
But while the U.S. may be short on individual stars compared to Italy, Bradley said the team will rely more on a collective effort.
"We are a real team. Every player plays for his teammates and we have a strong mentality," he said. "That helps us forward in difficult times."
The United States is on a three-match winning streak but this is the first time coach Jurgen Klinsmann will be able to call on his top players since November's 3-2 victory over Slovenia. It defeated Venezuela and Panama while playing with a backup squad.
However, it will be without Landon Donovan, who was forced to withdraw Sunday because of an illness and will miss the chance to play together with Clint Dempsey for the first time since Klinsmann was hired as coach last summer.
Jermaine Jones also had to pull out because of a strained right calf. The pair have been replaced in the squad by Sasha Kljestan and Brek Shea for the game in Genoa.
Klinsmann has had a mixed start as U.S. coach with four wins, four losses and a draw. But Bradley believes the players can take huge leaps forward under the German.
"He was a great footballer, he played for Inter Milan, he won the World Cup, and now he's looking to transfer that winning mentality to our team," Bradley said.
Italy will nevertheless be expected to win, although coach Cesare Prandelli is likely to experiment somewhat with his lineup.
Top forwards Giuseppe Rossi and Antonio Cassano are both still out with long-term injuries and Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli has been left out of the squad because of his hot temper and unpredictability.
Pablo Osvaldo was also overlooked after he was red carded in Sunday's 4-1 loss at Atalanta for kicking out at Luca Cigarini in an off-the-ball incident.
Prandelli introduced a code of ethics when he took over the Italy squad after the 2010 World Cup, and said anyone who fails to live up to those standards will be left out his squad for this summer's European Championship.
"Players know that by acting this way they're putting a call-up for the Euros at risk," Prandelli said. "It's time to stop with these things, kicking out in reaction and hitting. It's a sign of weakness. Anyone who risks leaving the team down to 10 players at the Euros cannot be in the national team.
"I haven't talked to Osvaldo and Balotelli, they know my number. I'm very disappointed they haven't called. And so I'm waiting for a call."
Udinese striker Antonio Di Natale - who scored his 18th league goal of the season on Sunday - could be chosen to spearhead the attack against the Americans.
"He's found an extraordinary consistency," Prandelli said. "Now I need to try to see how he can be integrated into this group."
Roma striker Fabio Borini has been included in the Italy squad for the first time.

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. (AP) ? Largely on the sidelines of the GOP race, Newt Gingrich is pinning his fleeting Republican presidential hopes on Georgia, where his political career began, and a cluster of states that vote the same day.
He's likely to sustain two more losses before Super Tuesday ? in Michigan and Arizona, two states he's ceded to rivals Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum ? and could be riding a nine-state losing streak by the time the March 6 contests roll around.
The former House speaker has no opportunities for break-out performances in debates, which he used twice before to pull his campaign back from the brink.
He squandered an opportunity in a debate Wednesday night to reassert himself in what's become a two-man race. He was relegated to the role of referee between Romney and Santorum, an appearance that underscored just how much he's on the periphery of the GOP nomination fight.
As the political world focuses on Tuesday's contests in Michigan and Arizona, Gingrich's look-ahead, Super Tuesday strategy is filled with risks
"There's only so long you can play for time," says GOP consultant Terry Nelson, a top strategist for previous presidential candidates who is unaligned in this race. "People pay attention around these contests. When you don't compete in them, you take yourself out of the conversation."
Not that Gingrich is letting such notions bother him.
"The fact is, even though this is at times hard and at times with its ups and downs, I am cheerful," Gingrich said Thursday as he gazed out over a packed Idaho ballroom. It's an adjective not usually used to describe the hard-charger with a reputation for being cantankerous, though Gingrich, himself, used it when candidates were asked in Wednesday night's debate to describe themselves in one word.
In recent days, he's retooled his message to focus largely on an aggressive domestic energy policy in hopes of capitalizing on voter anxiety over spiking fuel prices. It's unclear whether that's working. He's languishing in national polls behind both Romney and Santorum and isn't faring much better in races in upcoming states.
This wasn't how it was supposed to be after Gingrich's sound victory in South Carolina just a month ago. That turned out to be his sole triumph.
He went all out in Florida only to get thumped by a resurgent Romney. Low on cash, Gingrich barely competed in the states that followed ? and had the underwhelming finishes to show for it. And he's left Michigan and Arizona to his opponents.
"Some candidates approach things day by day, minute by minute, tweet by tweet and donor by donor," Gingrich pollster Kellyanne Conway said in defending his strategy. "He's methodical, he's patient and he's also adaptable tactically and strategically."
Gingrich has been playing off a future calendar as he looks to amass delegates to the national nominating convention later this summer. He is concentrating most heavily on upcoming contests in Georgia, Ohio and Tennessee, which carry a possible 200 delegates among them.
Senior Gingrich advisers point out that many states with big delegate hauls won't come until April or later. The advisers add that states he skipped either held nonbinding votes or, in the case of Arizona and Michigan, seemed like places where the effort and expense wouldn't match the payoff.
There was another calculation for letting Santorum and Romney go one-on-one in those states: The Gingrich campaign theory is that Santorum victories would cripple Romney or at least knock him from a perch of inevitability. On the flip side, they say that a strong day for Romney would harm Santorum's standing as the front-runner's main alternative, giving Gingrich a new opening to claw his way back.
Still, Republican presidential campaign veterans say Gingrich needs to pile up some victories soon or he'll face pressure to drop out.
By his own admission, a win in Georgia, the state he represented for two decades in the House, is critical. He stops short of saying a loss would end his bid.

NEW DELHI (AP) ? About 15,000 people die every year trying to cross the tracks of India's mammoth rail network, a "massacre" that a government committee said was being ignored by railway authorities.
The safety panel said new bridges and overpasses were urgently needed, but it noted previous recommendations to make the world's fourth largest railway system safer had been ignored. Its report noted that railway authorities were unwilling to view the deaths of people hit by trains while crossing the tracks as train accidents.
Most of the deaths occur at unmanned railroad crossings, said the report released over the weekend. About 6,000 people die on Mumbai's crowded suburban rail network alone.
Another 1,000 people die when they fall from crowded coaches, when trains collide or coaches derail, it said.
India's 40,000 miles (64,000 kilometers) of railway track cut through some of the most densely populated cities, flanked by shanty towns, in the nation of 1.2 billion people.
Railway experts say stopping pedestrians from crossing the tracks in congested areas would be virtually impossible.
"The situation is exceptionally dangerous in Mumbai where four or five tracks, or more, lie parallel and people living in slums on either side have no choice but to walk across the tracks," said I.M.S. Rana, a railway expert.
The High Level Safety Review Committee was set up by the government in September after a spate of train accidents. Around 20 million people in India travel by train each day.
The report called on the government to urgently replace all railroad crossings with bridges or overpasses at an estimated cost of 500 billion rupees ($10 billion) over the next five years.
"No civilized society can accept such a massacre on their railway system," the report said, referring to the crossing deaths.
"Reluctance of the Indian railways to own up to the casualties, which do not fall under the purview of accidents, but are nevertheless accidents on account of trains, can by no means be ignored," the report said.
The panel was especially scathing about the large number of deaths in Mumbai and recommended that the "grim situation on Mumbai's suburban system has to be tackled on a war-footing."
"Trespassing occurs because of lack of barricading, fencing, lack of adequate number of pedestrian overbridges and lack of facilities such as sufficient number of platforms, escalators, elevators for the disabled apart from insufficient train services. These are the main reasons for the heavy human death toll," the report said.

Partnership brings fitness to Clair's House | Children Health Wizard
PANAMA CITY ? The girls of Clair?s House have a new option for getting physically active and fit thanks to a partnership between Children?s Home Society and Anytime Fitness.
Bryan Meeder, residential supervisor at Clair?s House, said the girls have been asking for exercise options and are excited about having them.
?The teenagers always voice that they would want some type of exercise environment, and it?s always tough to purchase your own; it?s expensive for quality equipment,? Meeder said. ?They?re all extremely excited. ? [A] lot of them have said this is what they have been waiting for.?
The agreement allows the girls of Clair?s House, a residential group home for kids between the ages of 12 and 18, to use the facilities at Anytime Fitness. Not only will having access to Anytime Fitness enable the girls to increase their fitness, Wendy Morgan, development specialist for the Emerald Coast Division of CHS, said gaining resilience and confidence will help them in the future.
?Many teenagers battle weight problems, which often make them victims of teasing, exclusion or outright bullying. The girls at Clair?s House have already been victimized, many of them for most of their lives by abuse, abandonment, or neglect. They are already in counseling to deal with these issues,? Morgan said. ?The girls already have enough to deal with without being teased about their bodies.?
Kara Darouse, gym manager for Anytime, said they were enthusiastic about this possibility when Meeder approached them.
?That?s why we were eager to get involved because childhood obesity. ? It?s our responsibility to teach kids health and fitness the same way it is to teach them reading and writing,? Darouse said. ?This is your body, it?s the only one you have and what you learn when you?re young versus waiting until you?re 37 and waking up and going, ?Now I have a problem,? ? Darouse said.
The girls will have full access to Anytime Fitness and group training sessions are in the works to teach them how to use the machines and what they need to do to be in better health. One of the classes the girls can take is the new Hip Hop for Teens class.
?I think it?s the perfect time to bring the girls in, at the beginning of this, so everyone is new and will start off on the same foot with it,? Darouse said.
She added that she hopes this will lead to more local children getting excited about physical fitness and their health. Morgan said the environment in the gym was important for them, too.
?We wanted a good, safe, family-friendly environment because we work so hard to give them that. We want to keep that going as much as possible,? Morgan said.

Israel blames Iran for series of Bangkok blasts (AP)
BANGKOK ? Israel accused Iran of waging a covert campaign of state terror that stretched this week from the Middle East to the heart of Asia after a bungled series of explosions led to the capture of two Iranians in Bangkok.
Authorities in Israel ratcheted up security at home and abroad following Tuesday's explosions in the Thai capital, escalating a confrontation over Iran's suspect nuclear program and raising fears of war.
On Monday, an Israeli diplomat's wife and driver were wounded in New Delhi when a bomb stuck to their minivan exploded, and another device was defused on an Israeli Embassy car in Tbilisi, Georgia. Israel blamed Iran for those attacks as well.
Israel has threatened military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, and Iran has blamed the Jewish state for the recent killings of Iranian atomic scientists.
Iran denied responsibility for the attacks in India and Georgia, which appeared to mirror the killings of the Iranian scientists that used "sticky bombs."
The series of blasts in Bangkok wounded four Thai civilians and blew off the leg of an Iranian who had fled a house carrying what looked like grenades after a cache of explosives ignited there, apparently by mistake.
When police searched the Iranians' home, the bomb squad found and defused two explosives, each made of three or four pounds of C-4 explosives inside a pair of radios, and National Police Chief Gen. Prewpan Damapong said the bombs were "magnetic" and could be stuck on vehicles.
The wounded Iranian was in police custody at a Bangkok hospital and immigration police detained a second Iranian as he tried to board a flight for Malaysia. Security forces hunted for a third Iranian suspect.
Israel's Channel 10 TV quoted unidentified Thai authorities as saying the captured Iranians confessed to targeting Israeli interests. The site of the blast is just a few miles from the Israeli Embassy.
There was no comment from Iranian officials in Tehran on Tuesday's series of explosions in Thailand.
Thai government spokeswoman Thitima Chaisaeng said "we need more analysis" to determine who was behind the attack and whether Iran was involved. She refused to comment on what the Iranians might have been planning or whether targets had been identified.
There seemed to be no doubt in the minds of Israeli officials, who blamed Iran and its Lebanese ally, Hezbollah.
"The attempted terrorist attack in Bangkok proves once again that Iran and its proxies continue to perpetrate terror," Defense Minister Ehud Barak said in Singapore. "The recent terror attacks are yet another example of this."
Iran and Hezbollah are "unrelenting terror elements endangering the stability of the region and endangering the stability of the world," added Barak, who was in Bangkok on Sunday, according to Israel's Defense Ministry.
Added Israeli Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch, in an interview with Israel Radio: "We know who carried out the terror attacks, we know who sent them, and Israel will settle the score with them."
On Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had thwarted attacks in recent months in Azerbaijan, Thailand and unspecified other countries. He blamed Iran and Hezbollah, both of which have deep grievances against the Jewish state.
Hezbollah battled Israel in the summer of 2006, and on Sunday, the Lebanese guerrilla group marked the anniversary of the 2008 assassination of one of its commanders, Imad Mughniyeh, in a bombing widely believed to have been carried out by Israel.
In Israel, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said security was heightened at public places, foreign embassies and offices, as well as Ben-Gurion International Airport. He said patrols have been stepped up and police were instructed to be especially vigilant.
The first blast in Bangkok ripped off part of the roof of an explosives-filled house where the three Iranians were staying, police said.
Surveillance video from just after that blast showed separate images of each of the three suspects walking down the middle of a residential street.
One man ? identified by police as Saeid Moradi ? could be seen wearing a baseball cap and a dark jacket. He carried a large backpack over one shoulder and what appeared to be two portable transistor radios ? one in each hand.
"He tried to wave down a taxi ... and the driver refused to take him," Police Gen. Pansiri Prapawat said. Moradi responded by hurling an explosive device ? possibly a grenade ? that partially destroyed the taxi and wounded its driver.
Police then tried to apprehend Moradi on a nearby street. He hurled a grenade at them, "but somehow it bounced back" and blew off his leg, Pansiri said.
Photos of Moradi showed him lying on a sidewalk strewn with broken glass in front of a primary and secondary school. Hospital officials said his right leg was sheared off below the knee, while his left leg was severely mangled.
Police said a second Iranian, Mohummad Hazaei, was detained at Bangkok's international airport; he had been seen in the closed-circuit TV video also carrying a large backpack. He wore sunglasses, a T-shirt, pants and tennis shoes.
The third Iranian, dressed in camouflage shorts, carried nothing.
Three Thai men and one Thai woman were wounded and treated at a hospital, said Dr. Suwinai Busarakamwong.
Authorities are trying to trace Moradi's movements. Initial reports indicated he arrived in Thailand from Seoul, South Korea on Feb. 8, Pansiri said, landing at the southern resort of Phuket, and staying several nights in a hotel in Chonburi, a couple hours drive southeast of Bangkok.
A bomb disposal unit checked a dark backpack near the spot where Moradi fell and police found Iranian currency, U.S. dollars and Thai money, Pansiri said.
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra called on people "not to panic" and said the situation was under control.
The U.S. condemned the blasts. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland didn't blame Iran directly, but noted Monday's incidents in India and Georgia, and recent "Iranian-sponsored" and "Hezbollah-linked" plots to attack Israeli and Western interests in Azerbaijan and Thailand.
Will Hartley, head of the Terrorism & Insurgency Center at IHS Jane's in London, said it's "unclear why Iran would risk an attack on Israeli interests in India, when India has been broadly supportive of Iran during the recent nuclear sanctions debate, and is one of Iran's most important trade partners."
"The attacks in India, Georgia and now Thailand have all been highly amateurish," he added. "And lack the sophistication that would normally be expected from an operation executed by either Hezbollah or Iran's own external operations wing, the Quds Force."
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday that the U.S. has common cause with Israel and the international community to ensure that Iran does not develop a nuclear weapon. He said the U.S. and other nations have taken strong steps with sanctions and stressed the importance of keeping the international community together.
But Panetta said he doesn't think Israel has made a decision to launch a military strike on Iran to thwart its nuclear ambitions.
Last month in Thailand, a Lebanese-Swedish man with alleged links to pro-Iranian Hezbollah militants was detained by Thai police. He led authorities to a warehouse filled with more than 8,800 pounds (4,000 kilograms) of urea fertilizer and several gallons of liquid ammonium nitrate.
Israel and the United States at the time warned their citizens to be alert in the capital, but Thai authorities said Thailand appeared to have been a staging ground but not the target of any attack.
Pansiri, the senior Thai police officer, said that "so far, we haven't found any links between these two cases."
Thailand has rarely been a target for international terrorists, but its main airport is a major hub for Asian air travel and its government ? heavily reliant on tourism ? is tolerant of foreigners and is often accused of corruption and graft.
Since 2004, it has faced domestic Muslim insurgency, but violence has traditionally been limited to the country's three southernmost provinces.
In New Delhi, Indian investigators were scanning closed-circuit TV video in their search for the motorcyclist who stuck the bomb to the Israeli Embassy car that injured four people, including a diplomat's wife. She was in critical but stable condition.
Indian Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram said it appeared to be a terrorist attack carried out by a "very well-trained person."
Israeli media reported that Mossad teams are in Bangkok and New Delhi to investigate the explosions.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva Hospitalized In Brazil
SAO PAULO -- Brazil's popular former president has been hospitalized.
Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is complaining of fatigue and loss of appetite as he undergoes radiation therapy for throat cancer diagnosed late last year.
The Sirio-Libanes hospital in Sao Paulo said in an emailed statement Saturday that doctors found inflamed tissue in Silva's throat. They say that's a normal side affect of his cancer treatment, but they opted to keep him in the hospital overnight for observation.
The statement said that Silva's health is generally good and his treatment plans will not change. Doctors continue to say they expect him to make a full recovery.
Silva was president of Brazil from for eight years beginning in 2003.

Syrian army general assassinated in Damascus (AP)
BEIRUT ? Gunmen assassinated an army general in Damascus Saturday in the first killing of a high ranking military officer in the Syrian capital since the uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime began in March, the country's state-run news agency said.
The attack could be a sign that armed members of the opposition, who have carried out attacks on the military elsewhere in the country, are trying to step up action in the tightly controlled capital, which has been relatively quiet compared to other cities.
SANA news agency reported that three gunmen opened fire at Brig. Gen. Issa al-Khouli Saturday morning as he left his home in the Damascus neighborhood of Rukn-Eddine. Al-Khouli was a doctor and the chief of a military hospital in the capital.
Capt. Ammar al-Wawi of the Free Syrian Army, a rebel group that wants to bring down the regime by force, denied involvement in the assassination, which came a day after two suicide car bombers struck security compounds in Aleppo.
Such assassinations are not uncommon outside Damascus and army officers have been killed in the past, mostly in the restive provinces of Homs and Idlib.
Violence in other parts of the country left at least 17 people dead as regime troops pushed into rebel-held neighborhoods in the central city of Homs and seized parts of the mountain town of Zabadani, north of Damascus.
The U.N. estimates that 5,400 people have been killed in Syria since the uprising began in March. But that figure is from January, when the world body stopped counting because the chaos in the country has made it all but impossible to check the figures. Hundreds are reported to have been killed since.
Syria's turmoil began with peaceful protests against Assad's rule, sparking the fierce regime crackdown. But it has since grown more militarized as army defectors and armed protesters formed the Free Syrian Army.
After Russia and China last weekend vetoed a Western and Arab attempt at the U.N. to pressure Assad to step down, the FSA's commander said armed force was the only way to oust the president. Western and Arab countries are considering forming a coalition to help Syria's opposition, though so far there is no sign they intend to give direct aid to the FSA.
Arab foreign ministers were to meet in Cairo on Sunday to decide their next step. An Arab League official said the ministers were likely to consider calling for a joint Arab-U.N. team of observers to be sent to Syria to investigate Assad's adherence to past promises to halt the violence.
Damascus allowed in Arab League observers in December, but the mission was halted amid the accelerating bloodshed. The Syrians would be unlikely to accept a new observer team.
The ministers in Cairo also may discuss formally recognizing the main opposition Syrian National Council in a show of support, but such a step does not yet have full agreement among the ministers, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the press.
Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad warned that "he who bets on the collapse of Syria is betting on failure," and said the government will "overcome difficulties" through its program of reforms and dialogue with opponents. The opposition has rejected the regime's reform promises and offers of dialogue, saying they will settle for nothing less than Assad's ouster.
Speaking to reporters in Damascus, he gave a vehement defense of the regime, denying it was shelling residential areas in Homs or other cities and laying out the state's stance that it faces armed terrorists who reject attempts at reconciliation.
He denounced the Free Syrian Army as "reminiscent of criminals, drugs addicts and people who have come out of prison." He said attacks by the group had killed 1,500 members of the military and security forces since March, and accused Arab countries of "encouraging armed groups to launch terrorist attacks.".
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, one of Assad's top allies, warned Arab countries on Saturday not to give aid to the opposition.
Speaking to tens of thousands of supporters in Tehran on the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Ahmadinejad said countries in the region that have never held free elections are trying to write a "prescription for freedom and elections for others" with the help of the United States.
"This is the most bitter and ridiculous joke of history," Ahmadinejad said.
On Saturday, Damascus gave Tunisian and Libyan diplomats 72 hours to leave the country, Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi told reporters. The move was in retaliation to the north African Arab nations' eviction of Syrian ambassadors earlier this month.
For the past week, Syrian forces have been bombarding rebel-held neighborhoods in Homs, aiming to regain control of one of the main cities involved in the uprising. Activists say more than 400 people have been killed in the campaign.
On Saturday, Syrian troops shelled the Baba Amr district in Homs, killing at least nine people, and another in the Bab Sbaa area, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees said 15 people were killed in Baba Amr on Saturday.
The Observatory also reported that regime troops moved into parts of Zabadani, north of Damascus, after intense shelling and after rebel soldiers pulled back to spare residents' property from further damage. Three people were killed in the bombardment, the group said.
Troops and rebel soldiers battled in Douma, a suburb of Damascus, said Mohammed Doumany, an activist there. The Observatory said troops stormed the Grand Mosque in Douma and detained a number of people who were inside.
The Observatory also reported a rare clash between troops and defectors late Friday in the northern Damascus neighborhood of Qaboun but had no details. It said troops shot dead an activist in the area.
In Idlib, where rebels control some areas, army defectors detonated roadside bombs and hand grenades against military vehicles near the village of Kfar Oweida Friday night, killing at least 10 soldiers, the Observatory said.
